Fun Diving in Marsa Alam

The information on this page is intended for divers who are already certified; if you are new to diving/not certified, please visit our dedicated page.

Marsa Alam and its surrounding waters offer an exceptional variety of scuba diving experiences. Here, there is something for every taste: shallow reefs accessible from the shore, massive off-shore reefs accessible by zodiac/speedboat or by boat through exciting full-day trips including lunch; harboring seagrass beds, huge reef walls and drop-offs, stunning coral gardens, thrilling caves & canyons and even a few wrecks!

More than 30 dives sites are on offer, among them legendary reefs such as Elphinstone, Abu Dabbab, Shaab Samadai (Dolphin House) and the Fury Shoals.

The diving in Marsa Alam is suitable for all experience levels, ranging from gently sloping dives in sheltered bays to challenging drift, deep and adventure dives. Currents vary from very mild to pretty strong, each having their advantages and disadvantages.

To ensure safe diving, we adjust our choices of sites to experience, season, weather and sea conditions and what you wish to see. Diving with turtles, dugongs, dolphins or sharks: we know where to take you!

WHAT KIND OF DIVE WILL YOU GO FOR?

Boat Dive

Boat diving is by far the most convenient: easy access to dive sites, and minimal walking around with your gear on your back. Plus, some of Marsa Alam’s best dive sites, like Marsa Mubarak, Shaab Marsa Alam, Shaab Samadai and the Fury Shoals, can only be reached by boat.

Visit these stunning off-shore reefs thanks to our exciting full-day trips on our comfortable and fully equipped diving boat. Lunch and refreshments served on board included.

Shore Dive

Marsa Alam is renowned for its many spectacular beaches, with easy access to house reefs, making it a famous shore diving destination.

We offer daily shore diving programs; even on windy days, we will always find a protected bay where we can enjoy a perfect diving day! Except for some remote dive sites, shore diving allows you to dive in the morning and be back at your hotel for lunch time – having the afternoon free for another activity or…farniente.

Speedboat Dive

Diving from a zodiac/speedboat thrills adrenaline lovers: being out on the water, speeding to a dive site, entering the water with a backroll like James Bond and deploying your SMB before your ascent for the captain to spot you…it’s such an exhilarating form of diving!

Hidden gems and remarkable dive sites like Shaab Abu Dabbab, Sharm Abu Dabbab, Om Halhala, Nelson Reef, Long Canyon, and Nemo City are easily reachable by zodiac/speedboat.

Drift & Adventure Dive

Marsa Alam offers a great playground for adventure, with stunning drop-offs and huge reef walls exposed to heavy currents – some perfect hunting grounds for many species of sharks!

A minimum number of logged dives is required for the most challenging dive sites like Elphinstone, as well as at least one prior check dive with us in an easier dive site. Regardless of your level of certification, challenging dives are subject to the guide’s appraisal during the check dive.

Shallow Dive

We love shallow dive! Diving the coral reefs is an all-time favorite to most scuba divers and we are blessed to have here breathtaking coral reefs, amongst the healthiest in the world.

In shallow waters the reef and fishes are more vibrant, the colors more striking, the visibility increased, and dive time is limited only by air consumption. So let’s experience more of what the aquatic world has to offer close to the surface!

Deep Dive

If you wish to experience the thrill of going deeper than 20 metres, as the water gets darker and colder, and test your resistance to narcosis, we will be happy to guide you down there, in strict observance of safety rules. Maximum depth depends on your certification level, and remains within the recreational diving limit of 40 meters.

Early Morning Dive

Curious divers know that sunrise is a privileged time to observe marine life. As the sun rises, watching the fish returning to their daily activities while the reefs and pinnacles are awakening is an amazing experience.

The calmness of early morning diving cannot be compared with any other form of scuba diving – we recommend it to all our guests.

Night Dive

Sunset is a really privileged time to observe marine life; submerge when the sun sets and the water glows orange and watching the nocturnal creatures of the underwater world come out to play is truly exciting.

The thrill of exploring the underwater in the complete dark, just by torchlight, cannot be compared with any other form of scuba diving – we recommend it to all our guests.

Cave & Cavern Dive

Many of our dive sites have beautiful cave, cavern and canyon systems, some allowing the sunlight to enter and creating a magical atmosphere.

There, you can hover amid the handiwork of nature, which has slowly shaped chambers and holes over centuries. Thread through tunnels and explore darkened passageways where the oddest creatures seek sanctuary.

Wreck Dive

Although Marsa Alam is not famous for its wreck diving, we have a few covered shipwrecks that are worth exploring, like the Hamada (a former 65m long cargo vessel) and the Tien Hsing (a World War II wreck of a Chinese tug boat).

Subject to a minimum number of participants, we can also take you to the famous Salem Express, a former 100m passenger ship located 200 km north of Marsa Alam.

Macro Dive

Most divers want the big stuff, but there are so many beautiful tiny and unique creatures in the sea that it would be a shame to ignore them. For macro divers, small is most definitely beautiful!

Macro photographers will have the chance to take great shots of nudibranchs, shrimps and pipefish. Our favorite macro dive is in one of the many seagrass beds of the area; fins up and nose down, trying to spot the very shy seahorse hiding in the seagrass leaves!

Refresh Dive

If you haven’t dived for more than one year, a refresh dive is recommended to begin with. It includes equipment preparation and checking + basic skills review in an extended pre-dive briefing and in shallow water.

It is the perfect way to regain your confidence and update what you learned in your certification course before jumping back into the water.
