Being Environment Aware: Why It Matters

Environmental awareness is to understand the fragility of our environment and the importance of its protection. It’s being aware that we – humans – and our environment are inter-related and measuring the impact that our every action has on it, directly or indirectly. It should be everyone’s priority now to positively affect his/her environment or, at least, not harm it.

As divers and snorkelers, we’re blessed with the chance to see what few others see; the wonders of an entire world under water, with unique geology and biology. But we are also the first witnesses of the negative impact humans have on that world; coral bleaching, underwater debris and garbage, and declining populations of marine animals. And unfortunately, the diving & snorkeling tourism industry adds its own pressure on our seas …

Scuba diving is amongst the fastest growing recreational activities in the world, with an estimated 1+ million new divers being certified every year! There are concerns over the impact of mass dive tourism on fragile coral reef ecosystems, already under stress from global threats like climate change, pollution and overfishing. Obviously, the more diving & snorkeling tourists and businesses there are, the higher the pressure on the local ecosystems.

That’s why at SeaHorse, we aim at promoting sustainable diving and snorkeling. Or in other words, diving/snorkeling in a way that has little or no negative effect on the habitats we’re diving in.
