Marsa Alam doesn’t have many interesting wrecks to dive. However, the “Hamada” wreck, located inside the Wadi El Gamal National Park, is an easy and spectacular shore dive. The Hamada was a 65m-long freighter which carried a cargo of polyethylene balls on the road from Jeddah to Suez. It sank in 1993 and ran aground on the Abu Ghusun reef.
The vessel lies on its’ starboard side in two sections and sits between 5 and 18 meters deep. The most impressive and relatively intact features include the bridge, the rudder and stern propeller. Although relatively recent, the hull has been colonized by many species of soft and hard corals.
Parts of the wreck are so shallow that it is possible to snorkel them – so unique!
Apart from the wreck, Abu Ghusun’s reef is a great one to explore, offering incredibly well-preserved corals, and a batch of seagrass.
After the dive, we recommend our guests to enjoy lunch (10 € extra cost) in a traditional bedouin camp in the mangrove bay of El Qulaan, for a day to remember. Alternatively we also offer this as a half day trip, bringing you back to the hotel for lunch.
Driving back through Wadi El Gimal National Park, keep your eye out for the grazing camels on the way home!
